You may have heard that a federal judge has ordered the CA Department of Education to release personal information for all students enrolled in CA public schools since Jan. 1, 2008 as part of a lawsuit to ensure that students with special needs are provided with appropriate services. Records include names, some Social Security numbers, disciplinary records, medical information and progress reports.
Here’s what you can do about it:
Students cannot “opt out” of a court order, but an objection can be filed by filling out and mailing in a form.
If your child is a current public school student under 18 years old, then the parent can fill out the form.
If your child is 18 years or older, then they need to send in the form themselves.
Each student needs a separate form in a separate envelope.
Deadline to submit an objection is April 1.
